National Apprenticeship Week 2020

Posted In Academic

This week has been ‘National Apprenticeship Week 2020’ and we have been using it as an opportunity to inspire pupils to consider the evolving world of apprenticeships.

Traditionally, pupils in the Sixth Form look towards the university/UCAS route, but there are a growing number of Level 3 Apprenticeships (post A level) entry points into industry as well as Level 4 Apprenticeships (degree apprenticeships) which we would love pupils to consider as well – the opportunities are endless.

Last year there were 398,000 apprenticeships starts in the UK, with the number of Level 4 Degree Apprenticeship starts up 157%. There is no reason why pupils cannot apply for both UCAS and Apprenticeships and then make a decision on A level results day in August. The ‘Project Horizon’ weekly careers lesson the Sixth Form attend encourages and supports pupils to take up both UCAS and Apprenticeship applications in tandem.

This week has been about getting that message across. Mr Duff, as Head of Careers, has been putting on the VLE (available via parent portal) a daily ‘webinar and resource’ such as the Airbus webinar and Apprenticeships quiz below. Teachers have been wearing ‘I love Apprenticeships’ badges, departments have been displaying subject specific apprenticeship careers posters on their doors and tutors have been finding the time in afternoon registration/tutor time to have follow up discussions on the world of apprenticeships to clarify understanding.
