Lolly Discombe, Year 12
Name: Lolly Discombe
Year Group: 12
House: Orchard (day pupil)
When did you join Bethany?
I joined as a Year 9 day pupil in 2015. Prior to that I was at a local prep school in Kent.
What A levels are you studying?
I am studying Biology, Business Studies, English and P.E. I also do Creative Cookery during activities period.
Are you involved in any sports teams or music activities outside of lessons?
I am heavily involved in sailing and have competed all over the world, including recent events in Abu Dhabi and Italy, and I am also going to Finland this summer to compete. I was placed fourth girls at the RS Feva Worlds in 2017 and the School has been very supportive of my sporting commitments.
In addition to sailing, I am a member of the hockey team and was Under 15 captain last year. I also did rock climbing last term for part of my PE GCSE studies, and I am talking part in the MoonWalk in London this summer to help beat breast cancer.
Alongside my sporting activities, I also take an active role in helping in the School Library, and I support the School Librarian with the running of the Library, ensure that returned books are shelved, write book reviews, etc. I love reading, so I enjoy spending time in the Library at break and lunchtime.
What is your ambition after leaving Bethany?
I want to study Biosciences at a Russell Group university because I enjoy studying Biology and finding out how different things work. Ultimately, I’d like to become a biomedical scientist or perhaps have a career in the field of pharmacy.
What do you think is the best thing about Bethany?
We are provided with loads of opportunities: clubs, sports teams, and lots of options for academic study. I really enjoy the fact that we are given a lot of independence, and through roles like Library Monitor we are able to play a role in supporting the running of the school.
What advice would you give to new pupils coming to Bethany?
If you have any questions at all, just ask anyone – staff or pupils – as everyone is very friendly and approachable.
Mrs Anne-Marie Sturrock, Teacher of DLS & EAL, tutor: Lolly is a keen, conscientious student who can always be relied upon to give of her best at all times. She is motivated to succeed and her wide-ranging ability in all of her subjects gives her a lot of choice for study at a higher level.
