Mrs Emily Hill, BA (Hons), PGCE Assistant Head Academic, Teacher of English
Date you joined the School
What do you do at Bethany?
I work as part of the Senior Management Team to ensure that all pupils fulfil their potential and are happy at school. I also teach English!
What did you do before you came to Bethany?
I’ve been a teacher since my early twenties – most recently I was Assistant Head at a small Cornish secondary school.
What is your favourite novel/music/artist/film and why?
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is my favourite book, because it made me laugh, it made me cry, and it kept me riveted from start to finish.
What is your favourite quotation and why?
One of my top three is They succeed, because they think they can (Virgil, because too often I hear pupils saying ‘I can’t’ which is incredibly self-limiting.
What was your favourite subject at School and why?
Definitely English – I love reading and writing. I harbour a not-so-secret ambition to write a novel.
Why do you like working at Bethany?
Because everyone is very caring and there is a real sense of community.
What interests do you have outside Bethany?
Spending time with my family; running; reading; walking.
What is your favourite childhood memory?
So many to choose from…! I’ll go with sneaking a peak under the Christmas tree in the early hours of Christmas morning with my brother.
What is your favourite colour and why?
Green – it’s calming and makes me think of spring.
If you were not doing what you are doing now, what would you like to do?
Be working on that novel…
