Celebration in October of Black History Month

Posted In General

Following the development in the School of the new Diversity Policy and the work of the School Council, Year 11 pupils, Angelina Johnson and Tumi Peters, supported by a number of other pupils introduced Bethany to Black History Month in Chapel.

Black History Month started in The USA and was adopted in the UK in 1976. The original purpose in the USA was to preserve the history of the Negro population pre and post freedom. In the USA it is held in February but in the UK it is held in October because this is the start of the school year and to help give black pupils a sense of pride and identity.

The Chapel was very well delivered and focused on the raising awareness of the positive contributions made by the Black Ethnic Minority to western culture and society. The Chapel introduced us to some very famous household names such as Dr Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks as well as some less unvisited stories such as that of Katherine Johnson, one of the mathematicians now celebrated in the film “Hidden Figures” which highlights the importance to the space race of the contributions of these ladies who, until recently, were not credited.

Having made such a positive introduction to this we look forward to celebrating this event annually and developing it further with our pupils who as we celebrate our diverse school community. Thanks go to all of the pupils involved in arranging this Chapel and especially to Angelina and Tumi for leading the initiative.

The Prayer from the Chapel written by the pupils:

Loving God, you hold us in your hand for we are all made in your image. Help us to celebrate our differences. Help us to use diversity to share with each other the richness of our many cultures, languages and backgrounds. Help us to dissolve racism and help us to work for a loving society in which none are despised and discriminated against by virtue of their colour. We ask this through Jesus, our Lord, who taught his disciples to see beyond all human division and reach out to the good within each person. In the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.
