This fascinating book tells the story of Bethany School from its beginnings in the 1860's to 1988. It shares a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and memories.
The book is available in hardback (£25) and paperback (£15). If you are unable to visit the office in person, copies can be ordered by post at the cost of £30 hardback or £18 paperback. For postage outside the UK please contact the School in the first instance and we can advise the cost. Cheques should be made payable to Bethany School.
The book was written by Skene Catling and Tony Cardwell.
The Rev. Charles Skene Catling was Senior House Master and Head of English from 1965 to 1987. He was a vastly erudite man, who brought a respect for culture to the School, but also a noted cross-country runner, squash player and mountaineer, inspiring many Bethanians in the pursuit of these activities. On leaving Bethany he retired to Devon but sadly died in 1993. This history of the School was Skene Catling's idea and he was the driving force behind the project. Sadly, the time remaining to him only allowed him to complete a few chapters and these were passed on, unknowingly to Tony Cardwell, who was privileged to complete this worthwhile and fascinating task.
Tony Cardwell was a member of the English Department from 1963 to 1983. Like Skene Catling he was a graduate of Bristol University. Among other activities he was editor of "The Bethanian", produced school plays and introduced Rugby Football to Bethany.
