About Bethany School : Spiritual Life
Spiritual Life

Bethany School was founded in 1866 by The Reverend Joseph Kendon, a Baptist Minister, and true to the roots of the School, all students, regardless of their faith, attend Chapel at least twice a week.  Services are not only led by our Chaplain, but also by visiting speakers, the Headmaster, other staff or students themselves.  Chapel is an important part of life at Bethany and gives everyone, both students and staff alike, the opportunity for some quiet reflection or prayer.  In addition the whole School attends our Easter, Remembrance and Carol services, which are held in local parish churches.

Almost every lunchtime there is a Christian club meeting for a particular year group and our Chaplain also runs confirmation classes.  Each year the younger students have the opportunity to attend a weekend away programme, fondly referred to as "Camp Pepperoni".

All students are encouraged to support charities, be they local, national or international.  Charities' Day in the Autumn term sees the whole School taking to the beautiful countryside for a sponsored walk.  Each House chooses the charity they would like to support and in 2007 over £6,000 was raised.  Some of the chosen charities included:  Kent Air Ambulance, NSPCC, Cancer Research, Rainbow Kidz, Save the Children Christmas Wish List and British Humanitarian Aid.

Charities' Club is a popular activity in which the students themselves organise events and choose which charities they would like to support.  In 2007 the team raised over £1000 for Water Aid and they are now focusing their efforts on supporting Demelza House, the children's hospice in Kent which is hoping to open a new hospice in London.

Today's teenagers lead busy lives and might occasionally benefit from the opportunity to talk confidentially to our Chaplain, Nursing Sister or a school counsellor.
