Lower Sixth students have the opportunity to run their own company for a year within the Young Enterprise Scheme. This is a national scheme in which students take on roles within their company ranging from Managing Director to Publicity Officer. Teams participate in Area Trade Fairs and the Young Enterprise Public Speaking Competition and, in recent years, Bethany students have achieved outstanding successes, winning awards at both area and county level.
In common with the popular television series, Bethany runs its own Apprentice Challenge in which students compete in a knock-out competition to find the "Entrepreneur of the Year".
We want our sixth formers to continue to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle in their adult years. To this end they all complete a "Body for Life" programme which increases their theoretical and practical knowledge of health, fitness and exercise. To complement this they also complete a one-term cookery course, "Uni-Gourmet", which teaches them the basics they will need to eat healthily at university and beyond.
In the final term of the Lower Sixth, selected students are invited to become Prefects or School Officials. Training is provided for them to develop their inter-personal, decision-making and leadership skills and all sixth formers take part in team building events both on and off site.
Other opportunities open to our sixth formers include:
- Participation in The Pengelly Society, a cultural club which hosts a variety of speakers from politicians to explorers.
- The chance to continue with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme to Gold Award level. The Award is hughely popular and very successful at Bethany. Currently over 40 members of the Sixth Form are participating in the Gold award. The Award is an immensely valuable qualification. It is widely recognised as the best programme for the personal development of young people. Universities and employers acknowledge the commitment, determination and team-work required to succeed in the Scheme.
- We have a link with high schools in Taipei and since 2006 a very successful and rewarding exchange programme has been in place.
-
Students have the opportunity to compete for the School, not only in the major team games, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Rounders, but also in individual or small team sports. Overseas sports tours and skiing trips are also very popular events.
Our Head of Careers takes an active interest in the ambitions and progress of each student, giving valuable support in the selection of higher education courses and work destinations. Numerous events and activities are organised to help students forumate their plans for their future.
