Bethany's Learning Support Department enjoys an international reputation for its success in giving specialist help to dyslexic students within our mainstream school. We have been supporting children with dyslexia for over 30 years and the School has been CReSTeD registered since 1994. Not only do we have a Dyslexia Learning Support Department with specially qualified and experienced staff but our staff across the School understand the needs of dyslexic students and the best methods of ensuring their educational and personal development.
A small number of students with other learning difficulties are accommodated within the Learning Support Department; their needs are catered for as our individual approach underpins all that we do.
The Department's approach is multi-sensory and based around the individual. Students are taught in small groups, while their peers are studying French in Years 7 to 9, instead of one GCSE in Years 10 and 11 or as an alternative to a supervised homework session. This small group instruction aims to extend each student academically through programmes designed to overcome their specific difficulties. Staff are well aware of the negative impact that previous frustration and discouragement in learning can have and of the problems of organisation and memory encountered by many with additional needs. Fostering a sense of self worth and building up confidence are vital ingredients of the support offered.
In addition to specific learning support lessons, there are also two full time Learning Support Assistants within the staff body. They are timetabled to support general class teaching wherever it is felt they would be most effective. They also offer Sixth Form support.
More detailed information about the support offered at Bethany is available in the information booklet at the back of our prospectus. If you would like to receive a copy of our prospectus please do so by clicking the link on this page.
