About Bethany School : Curriculum
Business Studies

Bethany means Business!

Business Studies is an increasingly popular subject, both in schools and universities. It is also seen as very relevant by a great many employers. At Bethany we offer three business courses which will appeal to students with a wide range of academic skills.

Is Business at Bethany for you?

If you would like to understand:

  • how the Stock Market works, and especially how to spot which shares might make you some money!
  • why product advertising works (and why it sometimes doesn’t!)
  • why India have just introduced a £1200 “people’s car”
  • how to use basic management skills to organise and motivate people (in other words to make them work harder but to enjoy it more at the same time!)

……and in general to learn and understand all about how the world of business works, how it affects you, and how you can influence it, then you should enjoy a Business course at Bethany. The information below tells you a little more about the courses that we can offer.

GCSE

The Business Studies GCSE is an introduction to the exciting world of business, covering most of the topics covered at A level, though at a lower level. Almost all the students who take GCSE continue with the subject to either the single A level or the Applied course.

A Level Business Studies

The two year A Level course takes an in depth look at the role of local national and international business, from the formation of small companies to the workings of household name multinationals. Students also investigate in some depth the various specialist areas of a company, including marketing, personnel and accountancy. In addition they learn how to interpret the workings of business from an individual consumer’s point of view, and how to develop and argue opinions on topical concerns such as ethical issues and the role of Europe. Assessment is by six modular exams spread over the two years.

Applied Business – a double A level!!

The Applied Business is a two year course which is mostly based around coursework assignments (sorry – there are still some exams!), and which offers two A level grades.

The Applied course therefore provides another route into degree courses and employment at 18+ for students who would prefer to consider an alternative form of study to traditional A levels.

Students will again study a very wide variety of business topics, many of which will involve talking to real companies. Most assessment is based on numerous coursework assignments, with students being graded on their content, presentation and analysis of a business situation, which can be either a real business or in some cases their own ideas. Students are for instance, required to produce their own business plan based on a simulated company of their own design. All students may take a different approach to the work and in effect can virtually design their own course.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise at Bethany gives students the experience and responsibility of running their own business, with production, accounts, share issue and every other aspect that one would find in a real modern company. Needless to say, it also involves many of the problems and headaches too! If you join Young enterprise you could even make some money! (Or you could lose it!).

Business visits, trips etc

The Applied students visit a number of employers during their course and many of their assignments are based around these visits, including a trip to Belgium. All the Sixth Form Business students have also had the opportunity to travel in recent years on department visits to France, Poland and Hungary.
