About Bethany School : Creative & Performing Arts
Music

The Music School is housed in what was formally the village school of Curtisden Green. It stands in its own garden a short walk away from the main school site and next to the girls’ boarding house. There is a large main hall capable of holding small informal concerts. This is where rehearsals take place, and also where larger class based activities are held. In addition to this are two teaching rooms and a further five practice rooms, all with pianos.

The Music Department runs a full programme of academic courses. Following on from Key Stage Three Class Music, pupils may opt for the subject at GCSE and A Level. At both levels, the department now uses the AQA syllabus. GCSE numbers have been full for the last two years, and the number of pupils opting for A Level music has risen quite considerably in recent times.

Within the teaching rooms are ten computer work stations, complete with the latest Cubase and Sibelius software packages. Each computer is linked to a midi keyboard. Pupils are introduced to these systems from Year 7, where they use them predominantly for composition.

Over a third of the school population learns a musical instrument. Pupils are taught by a team of highly qualified and enthusiastic instrumental specialists. Tuition in all instruments is available. The school also possesses a number of instruments for hire.

All pupils are encouraged to join an ensemble relevant to their particular interest. Regular ensembles include Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Brass Consort and Master class. Other groups can include close harmony choirs, music and drama collaborations and specialist choirs formed for special occasions. The school calendar lists a wide number of musical events, both inside and outside of the school throughout the year. These include lunchtime recitals, informal concerts and major end of term concerts. Most of these take place in the superb Upper Dining Room, where there is a magnificent Steinway Grand Piano which was recently reconditioned.

Bethany offers up to four music scholarships a year, following competitive audition, to pupils with above average instrumental ability. Enthusiasm and a desire to join in the wider musical life of the school is also very important. These scholarships provide for free instrumental tuition and fee reductions. Music scholars play a vital life in the school’s musical life, assisting and playing in many ensembles, all concerts and Headmasters assembly.

The Director of Music is always pleased to see prospective candidates for Music Awards by appointment.
