On 15th February the Maths Department arranged for Ben Spink of Architecture Workshops Cambridge to come and work with our Year 10's and A level maths students. Before embarking on the various tasks the students were briefed on the basic maths and physics involved with bridge building. They started with fairly simple structures but during the session combined their ideas and went on to build bigger and bigger bridges.
A couple of the end products are pictured here and all the groups constructed successful, sturdy cantilever bridges. The instructors were very impressed with the students' enthusiasm for the activity (maths lessons really can be fun!), which also aimed to develop teamwork, problem solving and design skills.
