Although the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary activity at Bethany, it is hugely popular and very successful with at least 12 gold awards being achieved by our students each year. The School is one of only a few in the south-east of England licensed to operate the award independently. Almost half our students complete their bronze award, with most moving on to take on the challenges of the silver and gold awards.
The expeditions are meticulously prepared for during training days. At bronze level, training takes place locally and on the South Downs before progressing to Dorset and the Peak District for the silver expedition. The gold expeditions take them to the Lake District or abroad to Chamonix in the French Alps.
The other sections of the Award require regular commitment to physical recreation, the development of a new skill and community service over a specified period of time.
The Award is an immensely valuable qualification. It is widely recognised as the best programme for the personal development of young people. Universities and employers acknowledge the commitment, determination and team-work required to succeed in the Scheme.
